Computational studies of the mitochondrial carrier family SLC25. Present status and future perspectives

Abstract The members of the mitochondrial carrier family, also known as solute family 25 (SLC25), are transmembrane proteins involved in translocation a plethora small molecules between intermembrane space and matrix. These transporters characterized by three homologous domains structure transport mechanism that involves transition different conformations. Mutations regions critical for these transporters’ function often cause several diseases, given crucial role homeostasis. Experimental studies can be problematic case membrane proteins, particular concerning characterization structure–function relationships. For this reason, computational methods applied order to develop new hypotheses or support/explain experimental evidence. Here analyses carried out on SLC25 reviewed, describing main techniques used outcome terms improved knowledge mechanism. Potential future applications protein more recent advanced silico suggested.
